GETTING TO KNOW DR JILLIAN UREN

Dentico's Dr Jillian Uren

Dentico has a chat with one of our new locum dentists Dr Jillian Uren.

Where are you from?
I am from a small town called Grabouw.

What is your dental background?
I received my Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of the Western Cape. I always see myself as one of the lucky ones who got a spot. I took a gap year straight after school as I did a student exchange to Colombia, so my chances of me being accepted at UWC were slim. Studying dentistry was very difficult for me… seeing patients, attending lectures and writing exams. In addition to that, our supervisors were very strict. I eventually made it to final year thanks to a the support from family and friends (and Bioplus!). I graduated in 2020, completed my community service year in KwaZulu-Natal. I then worked at dental practices in Khayelitsha and Parklands before arriving at Dentico.

How have your previous experiences added to your development as a dentist?
During my studies, we could join dental outreaches. This is something I really enjoyed. We had outreaches in Kraaifontein and other communities. My experiences through outreach taught me about the importance of holistic patient care. It’s not only about the treatment you give, but it’s also how you treat your patients as human beings. No matter how much knowledge and skill you have, it’s how you make someone feel. I always strive to emphasise kindness, respect and sincere care for others.

What do you believe you bring to the Dentico family?
I enjoy doing crown and bridge, and anterior restorations. I really enjoy improving the patient’s smile. In the near future, I want to further my skills in facial enhancements.

How did you find out about Dentico?
I applied to Dentico after Dr Adnill De Kock recommended the practice to me, and I’ll forever be grateful. I was very nervous, knowing how well the practice was doing. I went home that day and I told my mother how it feels like home.

How have your your first few weeks been?
The first few weeks have been good and challenging. It’s an adjustment moving from government to private practice, but I am happy being in another small town like Kuils River. It’s been great getting to know the patients, the practice, staff and procedures. The main highlights are definitely the treatment victories and the funny moments we have in the reception room. I’ve also gained great experience working at Dentico, especially when it comes to complex cases.

How are you connecting with the staff?
Each staff member brings something unique to the team, just like every member of a family. Our patients have been great, and very accepting of me, which I really appreciate. I know it’s not easy trusting someone new, but the fact that they support me as a new Dentico staff member gives me so much confidence.

Dr Jillian Uren and Dr Nichole Hendricks

Dentico puts a lot of emphasis on patient care and communication – for adults and kids. This sounds like this suits your approach?
Patients are generally scared of the dentist. It’s the last place one would want to be. I will always get the occasional “I don’t like Dentists, hey!”. As a patient, you never know what to expect, especially when you hear new sounds and see new faces. But with communication through every step, you start creating a good bond with your patient. It’s important to work on earning their trust and explaining what is happening at every step.

How has Dr Hendricks been as a colleague and mentor?
Dr Hendricks is an excellent colleague and mentor. Not only is she experienced in her field, but she has good values and morals. She plays a big role in my development as a dentist, and always strives to push me to my full potential.

Just watching Dr Hendricks in action is inspirational. She treats patients with great care and has their best interests at heart. She really is inspiring, being a business owner at a young age, despite the many challenges that comes with owning a dental practice.

What are your goals as Dentico?
I want my patients to feel at home at Dentico. My goals are to grow in knowledge and skill, especially in Aesthetic Dentistry.
